Earth Day 2016

This week, cities all across Ontario are celebrating Earth Week. With spring temperatures finally here and trees beginning to bloom, it’s the perfect week to celebrate nature, trees, and our environment.

The first Earth Week was celebrated in Philadelphia in 1970, and since then it has spread all across North America. This year, the week culminates with Earth Day on Friday, April 22nd. Only one day to celebrate our environment and discuss issues surrounding it is not enough. Earth Week gives us an opportunity to focus on nature for the entire week.

Many cities across Canada are celebrating this week with events centred around nature and trees. Check out EarthDay.ca to find an event in your city or region! The City of Toronto is offering dozens of events around the city this week. There are tree plantings, seminars, and concerts. On social media, use the hashtag #Rooting4Trees to join the conversation about Earth Week and Earth Day.

This week, make sure to be conscious of how we treat the environment. Turn the lights off, unplug any unnecessary electronics, and take a moment to appreciate the blooming trees and great weather.

Happy Earth Day!
