Arbor Week

We’re in the midst of Arbor Week in Ontario! Previously, we’ve celebrated Arbor Day, but it’s been stretched into a week so different areas of the province can benefit and participate in activities.

Arbor Day was first celebrated in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton to promote tree conservation and correct the deforestation of the prairies. Our first Arbor Day in Richmond Hill was celebrate in 1883. Now, Arbor Week is celebrated from the last Friday in April until Mother’s Day.

To participate in Arbor Week, check your community guides for various events held around your neighbourhood. The best way you can participate in Arbor Week is to simply plant a tree. It’s the perfect time to visit a tree nursery to pick up a sapling to plant in your garden or yard. This is a great way to teach children or to remind yourself of the great  benefits of trees which we often forget.

Trees provide oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide, making fresh air for us. Falling leaves and needles from trees decompose in the fall to make rich soil for the following spring. Tree roots help anchor soil to prevent mudslides and flooding. Trees also absorb and deflect sound, meaning they are natural sound barriers. Not to mention the great shade they offer can help to lower your energy bill!

Celebrate this Arbor Week by participating in community activities or simply planting a tree in your backyard. Use this week to celebrate the future of our environment and make a positive impact.
