September 20th to 26th we are celebrating National Forest Week. Our transition into fall is the perfect time to celebrate our nation’s trees and learn more about issues affecting forests across the country.
Established in 1920, this week was originally to raise awareness for preventing forest fires. It was renamed in 1967 to increase awareness about a variety of forest and tree-related issues.
This year, the theme of National Forest Week is Wildland Fires. This is a fitting theme, after the wildfires that blazed through the prairies and British Columbia this past summer. Whether starting naturally or through human intervention, wildland fires can pose a great risk to both nature and public safety.
Halfway through this week, on September 23rd, we celebrate National Tree Day. Many organizations, institutions, and schools have activities to celebrate this day and help further educate about our nation’s trees.
