With all the snow and freezing temperatures in many parts of Southern Ontario, it’s clear that winter has arrived. If the cold weather is making you think of last winter’s ice storm, you aren’t alone.
Last year, we experienced over 3 cm of ice in many places. We all remember the downed power lines, damaged property, lack of electricity, and debris covering the streets and sidewalks for weeks. This drastically diminished our urban canopy, as many older and sick trees were unable to withstand the weight of all the snow and ice, paired as well with the strong winds.
This winter is forecasted as being filled with more winter storms and powerful weather. To prevent the same consequences as last year, we have to take care of the trees on properties. Sick or damaged trees must be removed or trimmed before the winter storms hit. Taking care of these trees at-risk will allow for less property damage after these storms are over.
